You're so right about a long, relentless winter. My clematis are just showing leaves, no flower buds yet, but it is a later flowering one. Next month I have the unenviable task of taking them and their trellis off the wall so the outside of the house can be painted--I shall likely kill them all.
We did that a few years ago and the lovely guys who did the work on the walls couldn't help but walk on the clematis while it was laying on the floor. It didn't make any difference though, it's as rampant as ever!
Obviously I don't know about your clematis, but our one is tough as old boots, so I wouldn't worry - even if the work messes it up for this year, I bet it'll be back next year like nothing ever happened!
